A showcase of self-built printer projects

Water Printer

The Kalkulator V.1 (2022) is a self-built water printer. It works by placing droplets of water onto a heated bed. The water can come from either the artist’s household tap or a nearby natural water source. However, some water sources, like those containing high levels of minerals such as calcium and magnesium, tend to leave a powdery white residue when they evaporate. The Kalkulator was made as an artistic tool for research purposes.
The Kalkulator is a computerized numerically controlled (CNC) machine, based on the same principles as a 3D printer. Its precision sets it apart from the unpredictable and chaotic nature of water, which creates a contrast between the controlled and uncontrollable forces.

Fabric Printer

This artwork features an embroidery machine that is similar to those used in mass-manufacturing warehouses. The use of open-source technologies by artists emphasizes their ideas and intentions. All the components, systems, and software used in this project are from existing open-source projects. Therefore, it is not solely the artist’s creativity that contributed to this artwork but rather the collective efforts of the community. The CNC Punch Needle Machine MK-1 is capable of “punching” a small length of thread into a stretched canvas, and, dot by dot, it “prints” out texts or images.

Pancake Printer

The Paste Extruder 2.1 is a highly adaptable 3D printer that can be mounted on any existing 3D printer and can handle viscous materials. During the D*sign Week presentations, the printer will offer sweet and edible prints to those who attend the Sunday brunch.
