Stadtwerkstatt (STWST) is a cultural center in Linz - Austria which was founded as an artists collective in 1979. As early adopter in the context of new media it has a history of meaningful projects since the 80ties. Today Stadtwerkstatt is the residency for three initiatives grown out from this timeperiode. All of them are taking important roles in the production of artists and citizen generated content. Each initiative has developed its own „hands on“ approach over the past years. The cultural center includes the initiative Stadtwerkstatt itself, which consists of the four departments New Art Contexts, Discursive Media Channels, Club Culture, Cafe Strom. The initiative servus.at runs its own cultural Data Center, produces and features Art dedicated to Hacktivism, Open Culture and critical engineering – and is ACOnet (Austrian Academic Computer Network) member since years. Radio FRO, the free radio is producing and archiving austrian-wide civil radioshows. The d*sign week takes place primarily at the Kulturverein zur Schießhalle and in the Stadtwerkstatt Linz.
Kulturverein zur Schießhalle
The Linz-based cultural association Zur Schießhalle, located in the former Wirtshaus zur Schießhalle, is an association of several collectives and artists.
The building offers studios, communal areas such as a makerspace, an event room, a wood and metal workshop, a club bar, and a beautiful outdoor dining area.
